Today I got the chance to walk through the comic with one of my wife’s students (Hi, John!). He’s augmenting his reading homework with David Petersen’s Mouse Guard, which I can’t recommend highly enough. Comics are how I developed my expansive vocabulary — and appreciation of art.

It’s hard to believe some people still look down on the medium as lacking in value. Please. This is such a rich genre that can go so many different directions. And because it’s so visual, it’s especially good for teaching boys how to read because that’s how our brains are wired.
