Today I added Heroisum.com to www.thebigwordproject.com (welcome to anyone who has come from there!), which is a genius idea I read about in the new Wired magazine. A couple of grad students in Europe are putting together a social-networking experiment that allows anyone buy any word in the dictionary, for $1 per letter, and turn that word into a link to whatever website they want. I bought “heroism” and linked to this site. I almost didn’t do it when I saw that someone else had bought “hero” and linked to a site that benefits military personnel: It seemed a little silly to put this next to them, like a shack next to a skyscraper. But then I saw that someone else had purchased “heroes” and linked to a fan site for the “Heroes” TV show. As long as I’m not the first to put the trivial next to something significant, then I’m OK with linking “heroism” to the little story I’m telling. Unfortunately, that Heroes site has all the online graphic-novel stories promoted front and center. My stuff pales in comparison to that work done by comics industry pros, but hopefully I’ll keep building this into something people find interesting, nonetheless.
I just wish I’d been smart enough to come up with the idea those two gentlemen did.
